After the first Sorby Sweets cake class in the fall of 2017, inquiries immediately came flooding in regarding whether a class designed for kids was going to happen and how could I say no?! After much planning and brainstorming, we hosted the very first kids class last weekend!
The project for this class was a cupcake cake shaped like ice cream cones. As usual, each station was set up with everything that each attendee needed to execute their creation: cupcakes, frosting, cones, and yummy toppings! And, because this was a class designed for kids, each of the stations had room for two so that mom/grandma/sister/etc. could help their little baking champion with the tricky steps.
Some of the kids were experienced and others were not, but the number one thing that I stressed to all of them once we got started was that there were SO many creative things that they could do with their cakes to truly make it their own! For example, the first step was to arrange the cupcakes in the shape of cones. Some students made two cones, others made three!
Once the cupcakes were "glued" to the cake board with icing, it was time to pipe the buttercream. Everyone was given a bowl of vanilla and chocolate buttercream and then chose the color (or "flavor") of their third bowl. I was thrilled to see the different color choices. We pretended that pink was strawberry, green was mint chocolate chip, orange was creamsicle and blue was cotton candy.
Once the buttercream "ice cream" was added to the cones. It was time to decorate. Some students used all of the toppings at their station and others were very particular about the patterns that they were creating!
Each of the students left with a cupcake cake to be proud of. What's more, is that in addition to providing all of the kids with the opportunity to practice their cake skills, this was also a great way for everyone to bond over creating something special and delicious! Executing this first class made me exponentially more excited for the next kids class that is taking place in just a few weeks!
