COMING TO JOHNSON CITY, TENNESSEE SPRING 2018
Hey there! Thanks so much for stopping by!
My name is Amanda Sorby and I’m the creative talent and owner of Sorby Sweets. My style is sweet and feminine, and I place a huge emphasis on cake that is just as pretty to look at as it is enjoyable to eat. I’m a twenty-something Virginia native and I truly believe that food is my love language.
You may be wondering how I found myself in the cake business. Well, for as long as I can remember I have had a love for food and the kitchen. My mom always let my brother and I help her fix dinner and then as I got older I began to make my own creations. I was always the girl to choose home economics and culinary arts as my electives in school and then experiment at home in my spare time. For me, showing up somewhere with an armload of treats was totally normal – and to be honest, still is! After high school I went to college with the intention to become a history teacher. However, right in the middle of my senior year, it struck me that teaching wasn’t what I really wanted to do for the rest of my life. Around that time, I took my first formal cake decorating class at our local craft store. A seed had been planted in my heart. I graduated with a BA in history the following spring and as a graduation gift, took a trip to Chicago to attend the Wilton School of Cake Decorating’s Master Class where I learned all about their method. Of course, I posted pictures of what I was doing on social media and when I got home I started using those skills to make treats for family and friends - I like to say that it snowballed from there. I fostered my baby business for a few years and enjoyed the slow, steady growth until I officially became an LLC, went part time at my day job, and then finally took on Sorby Sweets full time.
What I have learned over the past few years of cake is that this is what I love to do. Food is, in my opinion, the best gift that you can give someone, and I get to do that every week. We are transitioning into a new season of business as we move from Virginia to Tennessee but I am eager and excited for what’s to come. Please feel free to browse my little corner of the internet. If you have any questions or just want to chat, feel free to e-mail me. I’d love to chat!
